Foci and Topics

The SCAPE Blog publishes on education, with a focus on the theme of our Academic Unit, the social contexts and policies of education. The Blog thus addresses the sociocultural and political aspects of education, in Hong Kong and beyond, across the early childhood, compulsory, and higher education education spectrum, in formal and non-formal settings.

Contributors

Professoriate staff, postdoctoral researchers, Research Postgraduate students with candidature are encouraged to send submissions to the SCAPE Blog. We especially encourage SCAPE faculty to encourage advanced doctoral students to contribute to the SCAPE Blog.

Style

Contributors are encouraged to submit professional blogs that can reach a wide audience of researchers, policymakers, practitioners, parents, and members of the media. Contributors shall aim to convey empirical and conceptual knowledge in accessible, provocative ways. With an aim of provoking authentic dialogue and engaging with non-specialist audiences, blogs should avoid the conventions of academic journal articles. Importantly, the posts can well be aimed to start a discussion about a timely topic (as compared to traditional forms of science communications as a one-sided process). Contributors are encouraged to define terms and concepts, making avid use of hyperlinks and impactful citations.

Submission Types

SCAPE Blog entries will span 500 to 750 words, excluding references. As the Blog grows, we intend to introduce additional submission types, including opportunities to incorporate video and infographics. In the inaugural year, then SCAPE blog submissions will include:

  • Research Soundbite: The research soundbite blogs will offer a snapshot of the recent research findings on a SCAPE Blog topic. The research soundbite will convey novel empirical and/or conceptual knowledge that would support policy and practice improvement in compulsory or higher education.
  • Education and Society: Education and Society blogs will offer evidence-based commentary on a SCAPE Blog topic, highlighting pressing issues of educational opportunity. This Blog may serve as a response to other education policy blog(s) or educational research. With a primary focus on education in Hong Kong, Greater China, or East Asia, these blogs bring to attention the enduring relationships between schools and society.
